Sun, mountain and pine in a triangle
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
An inverted triangle contains a rising sun with dotted rays, a dark pine tree on the left and a mountain peak on the right, with horizontal bands of stippled shading across the base. The design is built from stippled dots and solid black fill, with the sun left as bare skin. The tattoo is shown in black ink only, centred on the outer upper arm against a dark sleeve.

The sun never comes up over Carn Dearg the way the postcards show it. It climbs the shoulder of the mountain sideways, as if it is ashamed of being late, and by the time it clears the ridge the pines below the hut have gone from black to grey to green. I have watched it do that for thirty-one summers. My husband, Tam, used to say the mountain only kept its peak for the sun's sake. He said it to make me laugh, and I never once gave him the satisfaction.

My job was simple. Sit in the hut with the shutter open, log every thread of smoke, take its bearing with the brass compass Tam bought off a dead man in Fort William, and radio the station at Glen Ossory before the wind decides otherwise. The night before the fire season started, the wind came round to the north and would not leave. I did not sleep. I sat with the kettle cooling and the stars going out one by one over the plantation.
At first light the rays came up in their stripes, bars of pale sky over the ridge, and right where the path bends into the trees a single dark stroke rose straight up against the bright disc of the sun. It was thin as a hair. Anyone else would have called it mist. I wrote the bearing down, the time, and the word smoke, then picked up the handset and my voice did not shake at all.
The crew were on the slope within the hour, yellow shirts bright against the green. By noon the stroke was gone and the hill was quiet again. I put the kettle on and left the shutter wide, so the first light could come in and see what I had seen.
