Stacked books and flying pages on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A forearm tattoo showing a stack of books with rainbow-coloured spines, topped by an open book whose pages lift into sketched birds. Black linework and shading define the books and the pages, while soft rainbow washes and splashes of purple and blue spread behind the design. The composition runs diagonally up the forearm, with the birds trailing off towards the elbow.

The last cart out of Hallowmere was already loaded with the Queen's ledgers when you found the books stacked in the tithe barn, their spines painted in every colour the dye-works had left over. Nobody wanted them. Rain had swollen the lower volumes and the mice had found the rest.

Brother Osric said burn them. You said nothing and carried the top three to the window instead, where the light came in gold and sideways. The first one you opened was a book of sea tides, and when you turned its pages the ink lifted off the paper in grey birds that rose and wheeled above your hands before settling back into words. You stood very still. Osric's lamp hissed. Somewhere behind you someone laughed, and the birds scattered towards the rafters.

By dawn the whole barn was full of them. Pages drifted out through the broken shutters and up over the marsh roads of Vellmoor, and the farmers stopped their oxen to watch. You worked through the night with a bucket of blue wash and a stub of charcoal, pinning each flock back where it belonged, until the stacked volumes glowed like a rainbow the rain had never managed.

When the Queen's men came for the ledgers at noon, they found a stack of books with one volume open on top, its pages still stirring, and a sky over the marsh thick with birds that would not come down. They took the ledgers and left the rest. Years later a clerk in the royal archive noted that the barn had been emptied of everything but the thing nobody could count, and that its keeper had walked out along the marsh road after the last flock and never came back for her supper.
