Hogwarts crest watercolour tattoo on a calf

Calf · Mixed · Photo

A shield-shaped crest with a central letter H in a block frame sits on the leg, with outlined animal figures in each quarter: a lion, a snake, a badger and an eagle. Fine black linework is filled with soft watercolour washes in red, green, yellow and blue, with splatters and drips running down below the shield. The tattoo is centred on a plain pale background with black behind the limb.

The boathouse roof had leaked onto the shield for thirty years, so by the time the reunion dinner reached the pudding, the water stains had bled into something like weather. Marion Pike stood under the lamp with a glass of cheap red and squinted at the crest painted on the stone above the doors. Four quarters, four beasts, and the big H in its box that nobody had ever agreed the meaning of.

'Corvel always had the best paint,' said Dennis Oyelaran, who had captained the rowing eight the year the roof first gave way. 'We had to use whatever Brock left us, which was marmalade and mud.' Marion laughed, because it was true, and because the long drips down the bottom quarter had been her doing, a jam jar kicked over on a summer night in 1989 when she was supposed to be asleep in Thorne dormitory.

Nobody had confessed then. They had sworn oaths on the reed beds and gone on with their lives. Now Dennis took a small tin from his coat, the blue of the eagle's wing gone dusty, and a brush wrapped in a sandwich bag. 'Forty years,' he said. 'I think the wall can take one more coat.'

She took the brush. The old drip was still there under the varnish, a blue tongue reaching for the step. She painted over the stain, then in the bare patch above it she drew a small badger with its nose low to the stone, working the line slowly, the way she had once been taught to, until the whole crest looked as if the water had always meant to run that way.
