The pedlar Osric had carried books up the Vell Pass for thirty winters, and every spring his mule came down one volume lighter. Nobody in the valley could read them, but everybody wanted one, so he traded them for bread, mended harness, a goat, and once a pair of boots that had belonged to a drowned man.

That year the rain came early. On the high bend the stack slid, the wet got into the bindings, and the pages ran blue and pink and green into the grass. Osric sat on a rock and watched the colours spread, and the small black letters lifted off the paper like midges and hung above his head, shifting into shapes he could almost sound out.

A girl from the shepherd's hut came up the path with a lantern though it was not yet dark. She had no coin. She asked only which book was the one about the river, and when he said he did not know, she told him its first line, which her grandmother had learned from a man who once sold it to her. The letters dropped back onto the open book and settled there.

He gave her the book for nothing. The mule went down the far side that night with three volumes instead of four, and the rain stopped before morning, leaving the pass washed clean and the stack on the rock still open to that first line. Nobody in the valley has managed to read it since, but they all say it aloud when the wind comes through the gap.
