Stacked cartoon sheep on ribs

Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

Four cartoon sheep are stacked vertically, each standing on the back of the one below, with the top sheep's arms raised. The sheep have black faces and legs, cream fleece with soft grey shading, and smooth, outlined cartoon forms. The bottom sheep holds a small green sprig, and the design sits on bare skin with a pair of jeans visible at the lower edge.

Now then, sit yourselves down and mind the fire, because this is the tale of the Garrowby show and the four sheep that would not come down off each other. Old Ned Crabtree had bet the parish a barrel of cider that his flock could stand in a tower, and the parish, being fools, took him up on it.

The bottom sheep was Mabel, broad as a hay cart and twice as patient. She took the first weight without a murmur and chewed a sprig of clover the whole while, the way a magistrate chews on a bad argument. Then came Dorothy, who wanted to see what was going on, and Peg, who had never been asked to stand still in her life, and last of all Little Bernard, who was all ears and hope. He climbed onto Peg's back, looked about, and raised his arms to the crowd as if he had already won something.

The tower wobbled. The crowd gasped. Ned stood at the gate with his hat in his hands and his heart somewhere down in his boots, and the wind came off the moor and rocked the lot of them, and they all leaned the same way at once, like a choir that has agreed on a note.

They stood there till the bell rang for the ploughing contest. Then Mabel finally swallowed her clover, took one step sideways, and the whole tower walked off the field in a line, through the gate, and straight into the cider tent. Ned paid up the barrel that night, and he never once asked a sheep to stand for anything again.
