Stacked gold and black armband tattoos

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A forearm and wrist are wrapped with five stacked band-style tattoos in metallic gold and black ink. The bands include dotted borders, a leaf or feather motif, a row of small quatrefoil shapes, and a zigzag diamond pattern, with clean, even linework. The arm is photographed against a blue and gold patterned fabric, with the tattoos as the clear focal point.

The fourth band was the one Edith Parr could never settle on. She rolled her sleeve to the elbow across the counter in Leith and tapped the dotted border. 'Dots along the top, always dots. Walter counted them with his thumb when we were courting.' Mabel Ferrier said nothing. She had the gold leaf warming on the slate and the black enamel in its dish, and she had learned long ago that a customer who orders five bands is really ordering five winters.

The bands went on in a particular order. The first was plain, for the morning the Marigold cleared the Forth. The second carried the leaf and feather pattern Edith's mother had worn, pressed as fine as bread crust. Then came the row of quatrefoils, four petals each, one for every port Walter had promised to bring her home from. The zigzag diamonds came last, sharp as a fishing net, and Edith wanted them snug against the wrist where the pulse was.

Mabel worked the fine brush until the lamp burned low. When Edith came back for the fitting, she laid the five bands on the counter and frowned. 'They're lovely, Mabel, but you've only given me four ports.'

'The fifth is the blank one,' Mabel said. 'You'll fill it when he's home and tell me what he brought.'

Edith slid the bands on one by one, the gold catching the window light, and laid her thumb along the dots, counting them the way Walter had. The number came out right on the first try.
