Snowflake tattoo on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a pale, white-ink snowflake design on the inner forearm, just above the wrist. The snowflake has radiating arms and fine, delicate linework, and it reads lighter than the surrounding skin. A hand holds strands of faceted, clear beaded chain against a soft grey backdrop, which keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Tom,

The beads came off Mam's necklace in the end, all forty-one of them, because the clasp had gone and Dad said there was no sense keeping what you couldn't fasten. I've strung them again on waxed thread. They catch the lamp now in a way they never did when she wore them to chapel, and I hold the strand up to the kitchen window to watch the light go through.

Frost has been thick on the glass every morning since the thaw failed. I sit with my tea and watch the patterns crawl in from the corners, and on Tuesday I counted the arms on one of them, six at first and then, when I looked closer, twelve. I couldn't leave it alone. I've drawn it out in the margin of the feed ledger with the chalk from the lambing shed, because pencil won't hold on that paper. The arms took most of an evening. Dad came in, looked over my shoulder and said no two snowflakes ever fall the same, which is what he says about everything he can't be bothered to argue with.

I'm sending the beads and the drawing both. Take them to the man on Kirkgate who does the work with the machine, and ask him to go slowly on the fine bits, because they're the bit that matters. Keep the strand loose in your coat pocket so it doesn't tangle. And when the sun comes round in the mornings, look at the glass. The pale star sits there on the pane like something that has decided to stay put for the winter.
