Blue flower tattoo on a wrist

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small blue flower with bold outlines, swirling petal details and scattered dots sits on the inner wrist and forearm. The hand rests against a bare upper arm and wears two rings, one ornate and gold-toned. The background is plain, with a white top and a soft grey wall giving a clean, simple composition.

Dear Nell,

The bowl came back from the menders on Tuesday, and I have carried it round the flat like a bird with a broken wing ever since. You'll remember the crack that ran straight through the willow pattern, cutting the little blue bridge in two. Mr Okonedo on Cable Street said he could fill the break with powdered gold, and he did. Now a bright seam runs across the rim and down the side, catching the light from the lamp outside like a fishing line in the dusk.

I walked home along the canal that night, past the narrowboats with their curtains drawn and the water slapping black under the bridges. A man was sitting on the steps by the lock, sketching the lamps on the back of a takeaway menu, and he held the page up to me as I passed as if to ask whether it looked right. It did. The lines were quick and bold, outlined hard, and the reflections had little dots of light scattered through them like spilt sugar.

When I got in I set the bowl on the windowsill and filled it with water, just to see. The blue came up through the glaze the way it always does, and the gold ran through it in a thin bright vein. Someone had clearly thought the break was the most important part.

I think I'll keep the bowl where the streetlight can reach it. Come round on Saturday and tell me whether you still believe a mend can't be prettier than the original.

Love, Ruth
