Fine gold linework flash design of three stacked motifs, a lotus bud, an open lotus and a mandala, set within geometric triangles, hexagons and circles on a cream background.

Stacked lotus and mandala geometric design

Geometric · Colour · Flash

The design stacks three motifs vertically: a small lotus bud at the top, an open lotus in the middle and a larger mandala at the base. Each motif is enclosed in fine geometric outlines of triangles, hexagons and circles, with dotted arcs and small dots marking the vertices. The artwork uses single-colour gold linework and dotwork detail on a plain cream background, with a small caption at the foot.

The well at Hallow Cross had been dry for three summers when Marit Oddy went down it with a lamp and a bag of gold leaf. Her mother had gilded church roofs in the valley, and her mother's mother had gilded the saints in the chapel, so the family knew that gold will sit on bare stone if you wait for the damp to rise. Marit waited. The damp did not rise. She sat on the lowest rung with her knees drawn up and listened to the stones ticking as they cooled.

On the fourth morning a small bud pushed up through the cracks in the floor, pale green at the tip and tightly folded, the way lotus was painted on the temple walls her grandfather had told her about. Marit pressed leaf onto its petals with a wet brush. Where the bud had been, water rose in a ring, and the ring spread into a bloom as wide as a cartwheel, then a second ring around it, then a third, each one set inside the last like the walls of a walled town. Then the ring of dots at the rim began to turn. The villagers came with buckets and stood at the top looking down.

The old men said the gold had to be paid back, and the women said nothing had been borrowed. Marit climbed out with her hands stiff and her lamp gone out, and she never went down again. The well is still there, a round black mouth in the field behind the mill. If you lean over the lip at noon you can see the water lying flat and gold, with a pattern of light on it that the children call a flower and the grandmothers call a sum, and nobody in Hallow Cross has ever been able to say which of them is right.
