Radial mandala stencil design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A symmetrical mandala built from a central rosette surrounded by layered petal shapes, scrolls and small dots, drawn as solid white forms on a flat grey background. The linework is bold and clean with no shading, so it reads as a stencil or flash sheet design. The composition is centred and fills the square frame evenly, with no skin or body visible.

The stencil had been Mrs Okonedo's before it was anyone's, cut from card that had gone soft at the folds, and Pauline found it wedged behind the potting bench in the second week of the clearance. She laid it over the flagstones of the back yard and weighted the corners with bricks, because the wind off the allotments had a habit of lifting anything light. Then she went to fetch the spray tin from the shed, and when she came back the rosette in the centre had been filled in with fresh pale dust, as if someone had worked through the night with a finger.

She told the neighbour, who laughed and said the cat had been at the flour. Pauline did not argue. She cleared the moss from the petals one by one with a kitchen knife, and each scroll she uncovered seemed to lean a little closer to the middle, the way the petals of a real dahlia do before rain. By Thursday the bed beside the fence was humming with bees that had never bothered with the old roses.
On the last afternoon she swept the stencil clean, rolled it carefully, and slid it into the drawer with the string and the seed packets. The dots were still there, twelve small holes punched in a ring around the edge, and she counted them twice before she closed the drawer. Next spring, she thought, she would plant something that needed the full twelve sides of the garden to grow.
The following morning the dust had come back on the flagstones, faint and white, in the exact shape of the rosette. Pauline left it where it lay and took her tea outside to watch it.
