Hairdryer, comb and scissors flash sheet

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

The sheet shows two pencil-style black linework designs on tracing paper: a hairdryer with a rose and sprigs of lavender, and a comb with a bow and a string of pearls beside a pair of ornate scissors. Shading is limited to hatching on the hairdryer vent and small sparkle marks, with the rest outlined in clean single-weight lines. The drawings are in black ink only and are arranged loosely across the page with empty paper around them.

Mrs Dorothy Quayle had been closing up the Lilac Room on Thursdays for thirty-one years, and she had never once left the scissors out of their case. So when Pearl came in on Friday morning and found the case open and empty on the back counter, she didn't shout. She put the kettle on and went through the drawers one at a time, the way her mother had taught her to search for a lost hairpin.

The shears were in the dryer cupboard. Nobody could say how they got there. The hairdryer that lived beside them had been unplugged and wrapped in a tea towel, its cord coiled around a sprig of dried lavender someone had tucked into the handle, and the comb with the mother-of-pearl spine had been tied to it with a ribbon in a neat bow. Pearl stood there with the kettle whistling behind her and felt, absurdly, that she was being given instructions.

She rang round the other girls. Nina said it sounded like Dot had left a note. Dot had been dead since March. Nobody had found a note, but on the mirror, where the day's bookings were pinned, someone had drawn a small rose in lipstick, and beneath it a single word: Trim.

Pearl took the shears out of the cupboard, wiped the blades on her apron, and went to see who had booked the nine o'clock. It was a boy of about six with a cowlick, sitting very still on the cushion, waiting for her.
