Stacked triangles building to a geometric star

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

A vertical sequence of seven black line drawings on an off-white background. Starting with a single downward-pointing triangle at the top, each step adds more triangles, and the final figures are layered star shapes with solid and dashed outlines. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the composition is centred and symmetrical.

The string is still tied to the gate post when you arrive, faded blue and furred with wasp-chewed bark. Your uncle never explained the layout. He only said, pegging out the first rows in March, that the trees had to stand in threes or they would fight each other for the light. Now it is August, the windfalls are split and sweet in the long grass, and you stand at the top of the field holding a clipboard you have not yet written on.

Down the slope the oldest trees make a single downward triangle, its point aimed at the farmhouse roof. Inside it sits a second ring, then a third, each tier turned so its corners cross the one before. You walk the lines the way he walked them, counting under your breath, and by the sixth tier you have lost count of the apples. Somebody has been picking them up. Every morning someone has carried the bruised ones to the hedge, and the pile there is as neat as a stack of coins.

At the bottom of the field is the star: six points of trees, dashed where the saplings are staked and solid where the old ones still hold. You had taken the gaps for mistakes. Kneeling by the last peg, you find a biscuit tin lid pressed into the soil, your uncle's initial scratched into its rim, and a folded note tucked beneath it. It says only that the middle tree goes in last, and that you have to plant it yourself.
