Black and grey dotwork tattoo of a stag head with antlers and a geometric diamond above it, on the front of a thigh.

Stag head with diamond on thigh

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A stag's head with full antlers sits at the centre of the image, its face and ears shaded with fine stippled dots and a dark outline. A thin geometric diamond and vertical line sit above the antlers, and a solid triangle frames the base of the head. The left panel shows the whole thigh and knees against a grey skirt, and the right panel is a close crop of the same tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The stag came down to the ferry road the week after the bridge went under, and Ada Penrose was the first to notice that the thin diamond hanging above its antlers had no string to hold it. Her father said it was a trick of the wet air. He had been saying things like that since the flood, and nobody believed him any more than they believed the surveyor, who arrived on the Tuesday with a brass theodolite and a ledger of figures that did not agree with anything in the parish.

Mr Pyne spent three days at the water's edge taking readings. He said the stag stood exactly on the meridian, that its horns made an angle of forty degrees to the bank, and that the triangle beneath its jaw was the same shape as the church spire's shadow at noon. Ada sat on the wall with a bag of bull's-eyes and listened. She liked that he spoke to the stag as though it were a colleague who had not yet agreed to the terms.

On the Friday the stag turned its head and walked into the river. The diamond did not sink. It hung above the water, pale as a window, and drifted upstream against the current until it reached the bend where the old piers had stood, and there it stopped, level with the place where the stones used to be.

Mr Pyne's ledger was blank on the next page. Ada went down at low tide and found a single line of hoofprints in the mud, each one set exactly a rule's width from the last, running straight across the river to the far bank. She stepped into the first print, and it fitted her boot.
