A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Come closer to the fire, the ones at the back, because this is the part where the old folk always lean in. Long before the mill was built at Harrowdale, when the beeches still came down to touch the wall of the churchyard, there lived a stag in the wood above the village who wore antlers like a winter tree. Every ninth night the hunters came up the track with their lanterns, and every ninth night the stag walked out to meet them and said nothing at all, only turned his head so the lamplight caught the patterns cut into his brow.

Those patterns were the thing. Old Mab Thorne, who kept the bees, swore she had seen them move when the moon was full, lacing themselves round and round until they formed a flower, and at the heart of the flower a single open eye. Mab said the eye was not looking at the hunters. It was looking at the village, counting the doors that stood unlatched. She said a thing that counts like that is never cruel, only careful, and that carefulness is a kind of mercy nobody thanks you for.

So one winter the young miller, Tobias Vane, who had never once believed a word of Mab's nonsense, went up alone with a rope and a bad temper. He found the stag standing in the snow beside a clearing of ferns. He did not raise his bow. He only asked the stag what it was counting. The great head came round slowly, and the eye in its brow opened wider, and Tobias understood that the answer was his own name, and the year he would leave, and the year he would come home. He went back down the track without his rope, and he never married, and he kept the mill's doors bolted every ninth night of his life.
