Two roses and buds on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a tattoo on the inner forearm, showing two open roses with a small bud, several leaves and a trailing stem arranged diagonally down towards the wrist. The roses are built from fine outlines and dense stippled shading that gives the petals and leaves depth and texture. The ink is entirely black and grey against a plain light background, with the arm filling most of the frame.

Dear Nell,

The roses came back over the north wall the week after the men left with their ladders, and I have been out there every morning since with a flask of tea and your old pen-and-ink set, trying to draw them before the light goes flat. Mr Abernethy says I am wasting good paper. He may be right, but the dots are what take the time. Every petal has to be shaded with a thousand little stabs of the nib, dark where the bloom folds under itself and bare where it catches the sun, and I cannot hurry it without the thing going to mud.
The castle itself is nothing now but three walls and a gatehouse with no door. The keep lost its roof in the winter of the great storm, and the stair goes up to sky. Still, somebody planted those bushes a long time ago, and they have simply carried on, climbing the stones and throwing out long canes that reach for the postern as if they had an appointment there. The two big heads on the south side are open and blowsy. Beside them is a bud, tight as a fist, which I have decided is the youngest and the most stubborn.
Last Tuesday I followed one stem down from the wall to where it ran out in the nettles, and there was a single leaf I could not get right. It kept coming out too neat. Then I saw it had been nibbled by something small and patient, and the hole was the exact shape of a wren. I drew it that way, with the gap, and I think it is the best thing I have made since I left home.
Come in August if you can. I will show you the drawing and the walls, and we can pick a hip off the end of the stem and argue about whether it is a fruit or a flower.
Love, Margaret
