Ganesha elephant head engraving design
Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows an elephant head with large ears, tusks and a trunk curled at the tip, framed by an ornate crown and a circular mandala-like halo. The linework is dense, built from fine parallel hatching and stippled detail that creates shading across the trunk, ears and headdress. It is rendered entirely in black ink on white, with no colour and a centred composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The brass plate had gone green along its hinge, and Nell Tiller spent the first hour of the morning scraping it back to bare metal while the fair's lorries ground across the car park behind the gasworks. Her grandfather had carved the original panel himself, forty summers ago, on the elephant that still stood at the centre of the gallopers. Somebody since had painted over the trunk in gloss enamel, and the paint had cracked like old piecrust.

She worked with his burin, its ebony handle worn to the shape of a thumb that was not hers. Each line had to be cut a hair's width from the last, hatched across the forehead and the great soft ears until the eye took the shading for light. The halo around the head was the hardest part. It was a ring of tiny stippled dots, and she punched them one at a time with a pointed steel, counting under her breath to keep the rhythm steady.
Mr Oddie came round at dusk with a flask of tea and a face like a closed shop. He wanted the ride running for Saturday. He asked why she was bothering with the trunk, which nobody rode for and nobody looked at. Nell turned the lamp so he could see the tip, where the trunk curled back on itself like a question nobody had finished asking. "Grandad left it open," she said. "Said a thing should be able to turn back on itself if it wanted."
When the last hatch was cut, she wiped the panel with linseed and the lines came up black and sharp. Across the field the first bulbs of the big wheel flickered on, and the elephant's crown caught the light, every ridge of it burning.
