The drawing shows an elephant walking towards the viewer, with its ears, trunk, tusks and legs filled with dense decorative patterns. Fine hatching, stippling and bold outlines build up chevrons, diamonds, scalloped feather shapes and circular mandalas. The image is rendered only in black ink and grey tones on a plain white background, with the subject centred and filling most of the frame.

The gate of Harrowmere has been open for forty years, since the roof fell in on the great hall, and the elephant comes up the old causeway at dusk as if it had been sent for. You are the only one left in the lodge at the foot of the keep, and you have stopped counting the nights it has come. Its ears fan out like the wings of something that has forgotten how to fly, every fold cut with chevrons, diamonds and scalloped feathers, the same patient marks the masons once chiselled above the arches.

The first time, you went out with a bucket of water and a lamp. It did not drink. It stood with its trunk lifted and its tusks pale in the lamplight, then turned and walked back into the ruin, pressing its great feet into the moss exactly where the flagstones used to lie. At the centre of the broken courtyard it stopped above a circle of mosaic tiles, a mandala your grandmother swore was buried there, and lowered its head until the tip of its trunk touched the ground.

When you dug, the tiles came up one by one, and beneath them lay a small iron key, cold and furred with rust, its bow shaped like a lotus. Nobody in the village had ever known what it opened. You carried it up the stairs of the keep, past the cracked windows where the swifts nest, and the elephant followed step by step, its shadow filling the stairwell.

At the top, a door you had never seen stood open to the sky. Inside was a bare room with a single stone plinth, and on it a bowl of water as still as a mirror. The elephant lowered its trunk over the bowl and waited. You understood then that it had never wanted water. It had been asking you to stay and keep the place, and you set the key down beside the bowl and did not go back down the stairs that night.
