Starry Night tattoo on the upper back

Back · Colour · Photo

A woman with auburn hair, seen from behind and wearing a white top, shows a large tattoo across her upper back and shoulder blade. The design reproduces Van Gogh's The Starry Night, with swirling blues and greens, glowing yellow stars and a dark cypress tree on the left. The painterly shading is soft and blended, and the tattoo fills most of the frame against a dim background.

Ottilie Baine had spent nineteen years mending the sky, and she still disliked the job. The dome of Halden Reach was a painted ceiling of ceramic tiles, fired in a kiln that nobody living had built, and each one had to match the print a salvage crew had dragged out of a ruined archive. Cobalt, Prussian green, and a yellow the old pigments could only approximate. The stars were lamps set behind the glaze, and when one failed the whole swirl looked bruised.

The cypress on the left was the hardest panel. Her supervisor, Tomas Quill, insisted it must be tall and black and reaching like a flame. He stood beneath it most afternoons with a cup of cold tea and said the dark part was the only honest thing up there, because everything else was trying to be brighter than the dark. Ottilie nodded and went back up the ladder.

On the last night of the cycle, the lamp above Ridge Four died, and she climbed the scaffold with a spare cell between her teeth. From the top rung the whole dome turned into the painting. The rotation carried the swirls slowly over her head, blue rolling into green, the moon-coloured light sliding past her boots. She fitted the cell, pressed the glaze home, and the star came back, a small furnace of yellow among the blue.

Quill called up to ask what she could see. She thought about the old print, the hand that had made it, the way the whole night seemed to be moving toward someone who was about to leave. She said the wind, mostly, and came down slowly so she could look at it one more time.
