Mandala tattoo on a shoulder
Dotwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey mandala tattoo sits on the upper shoulder, built from concentric rings of petal-like shapes around a central flower. The design is made of fine dots and stippled shading that create soft grey tones and crisp outlines. The image is a close crop of the shoulder and neck, with warm light on the skin and a patterned teal fabric behind.

Agnes Teasdale kept the lamp-room at Harwick Colliery for thirty years, and in all that time she never once sat idle while the cage was down. She had a steel awl and a box of spent lamp-tin lids, and she pricked the lids while the men were underground, starting at the middle and working outward, one dot at a time, never lifting the point until the ring was closed.

The petals were her rule. Each ring had to carry one more petal than the ring inside it, so the pattern could never sit still. Her husband Joe said it was a daft way to pass the hours, and she told him a dot was a breath held and let go. When the lids filled up she hung them on nails along the whitewashed wall, and the wives came in to look at them the way they might read a letter.
The winter of the fire, the lamp-room was quiet for eleven hours and nobody came up. Agnes sat with her awl and kept going, the rings opening outward like a lock turning. At the hour the chargeman had promised, she had finished the outermost petal of the ninth ring, and the cage clanked at last. Every man came up. Joe came last, black to the eyes, and stopped under the nails without a word. He only put his finger on the flower in the middle, where the first dot had been.
