Dad's truck is still making that clicking noise, the one you always said meant a loose belt and a bad temper. I pulled onto the dry lake bed just to listen to nothing for a while. Three hawks turned slowly over the sage, and I thought about the morning you left for the coast with your duffel bag and that stupid grin, and how you swore you'd send a postcard from every town with a decent pie.
I have exactly one postcard, from Eureka, with a lighthouse on the front and two words under your signature. It's tucked in the sun visor, where the glare keeps catching it. I know what Dad would have said about those words, and I know you meant them the way he did, so I'll write them back to you in ink like you always wanted: stay gold, you soft-hearted idiot. The road loops back eventually. Come home before the porch paint peels any further, and I'll buy the pie.
