Script quote along a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black script quotation tattooed diagonally along a pale forearm, with the larger flowing opening words descending into smaller, more upright lettering. The linework is smooth and even, with consistent stroke weight and generous spacing between lines. The plain background and soft lighting keep the focus on the text and the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are fourteen the summer the Pritchard orchard goes to seed, and you have been filling your jumper with windfalls from the bottom row for a month before anyone says a word. Mrs Adeyemi-Cole, who keeps bees on the far acres, is the one who finally does. She stands at the gate with her veil pushed back and watches you come out sideways between the trunks, arms full, and she says, "Those were left for the wasps, not for you." Then she turns and walks off down the lane, leaving the gate open behind her.

The next morning there is a ladder against the oldest tree, a wooden one with the paint worn grey, and a note in pencil tucked under the top rung: Pick from the top. The bottom is for the ones who don't ask. You climb, and your palms go sticky with the sweet rot of the fallen fruit. By the end of the week your crate is full of russets that don't bruise, and she takes every one, weighing them on a brass scale and paying you in coins that smell faintly of the honey tin.

Years go by in that orchard the way they do in any orchard, measured in blossom and frost. The last September she is alive, she hands you the key to the shed and the ladder, its rungs silvered now, and says the old tree needs someone who climbs. You still have the ladder. You still leave the bottom row for the wasps. And every autumn you pick from the top, and the windfalls go into a bucket by the gate, with a label in pencil that reads FOR WHOEVER COMES NEXT.
