Black fine line script tattoo reading 'I will fear no evil for you are with me' across the upper back near the shoulder.

Handwritten script quote on upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a line of handwritten-style script in black ink that reads 'I will fear no evil for you are with me', running diagonally across the skin. The linework is thin and even, with the letters slightly uneven as in natural handwriting. The photo is in warm tones with no colour ink, and a grey top and blonde hair frame the edge of the shot.

The windfalls were coming down faster than Nell Pryce could gather them, so on the last night of August she took the lantern and went out to the far rows alone. Her father had gone to the fair at Scarlow and left her the ladder, the sacks and a dog that would not come when it was called.

The wind had dropped by ten, and the orchard went quiet in the way her grandmother had warned her about. Nothing rustled. Even the owls had stopped. Somewhere past the old Bramley a man's boots crossed the grass, slow and even, and then stopped beside the trunk where the bark had split. Nell knew the voice that came next, because it had her father's way of saying her name, and she knew she was not to answer it.

She did not answer. She held the lantern up and walked, counting trees the way she had been taught, one, two, all the way to the wall. The boots came after her and kept their distance. At the gate she set the lantern on the gatepost and said the words her grandmother had given her for nights like this, the ones about the shepherd and the dark valley. She said them plainly, without any fear in her voice, because she had never once been walking alone.

The footsteps stopped. When her father came home at first light he found the sacks full, every windfall gathered and laid in tidy rows, and the lantern still burning on the gatepost with its wick turned low, as if someone had been careful with it.
