Colour tattoo of two outlined rabbits, flowers, leaves and red berries arranged in a heart shape on the inner forearm, in a folk-inspired style with bold black linework.

Rabbits and flowers in a heart on an inner arm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The design shows two outlined rabbits facing each other, filled with blue floral motifs, surrounded by flowers, leaves, red berries and a small bee, all arranged within a heart shape. The bold black outlines are filled with flat areas of colour, with no shading. Bright reds, pinks, greens, blue and yellow dominate against the pale skin, and the composition is symmetrical and contained.

Dear Nell,

You will think it daft that I am writing when we are under the same roof for the whole of Saturday, but I found the box in the loft this morning, and I could not carry it down the ladder without putting something on paper first. The paint has gone soft at the corners, yet the two rabbits still sit facing each other on the lid, blue flowers across their bellies, as if they had only just stopped mid-sentence.

Great-Gran Ada painted them the spring after her own wedding, using enamel left over from the colliery stores where her husband worked. She was no artist, she always said, only a girl who could not sit still. The red berries are rowan from the lane where she used to walk to meet him, and the bee is there because one came in through the kitchen window while she was painting and she refused to shoo it out. Your mother always said the bee was the cheeky bit.

There is a heart round the whole thing, which I never noticed until I turned the lid to the lamp last night. Ada curled the stems so they meet at the top and point to where the rabbits look. I asked Mam once why she never gave the box away, and she said it was because those two never once looked away from each other, not in forty years of being shut in the wardrobe with the good linen.

So wear your comfortable shoes, love, and leave the box to me. I am giving the lid a rub with the Brasso tonight, and I shall bring it up on Saturday wrapped in my best tea towel. Give your Tom my love, and tell him the bee is not to be trusted.
