Steampunk cat in goggles
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A detailed pencil drawing of a cat seen in side profile, wearing brass-style goggles on its head and with clockwork gears and mechanical fittings across its neck and shoulder. The fur is rendered with fine, directional strokes, and the metalwork has crisp highlights and shadows. The figure sits on a plain cream background with a faint circular tone behind the lower body.

The clock in Mrs Abernethy's hallway had stopped at twenty to four for the third time that winter, and Tobias Vane was the only one on Cinder Lane who knew how to coax it back. He had a bench under the stairs, a tin of watchmaker's oil, and a ginger cat called Pemberton who sat on the bench like a foreman inspecting work he had no intention of paying for.

On the Thursday, Pemberton batted a brass cog off the edge of the bench and it rolled under the dresser. Tobias got down on his knees with a torch and found, in the dust, not one cog but a whole gearing of them, fitted together around a small pair of spectacles with lenses like the bottoms of bottles. Someone had built them a head for the job. Pemberton had put his nose right into the mechanism and was purring, which Tobias took as consent.
He fetched the goggles down from the hook where his father had kept them for the foghorn in the old harbour days, strapped them on the cat, and wound the little key at the base of the skull. Pemberton turned to face the window, the lenses caught the lamplight, and the whole hallway clock began to tick in step with his breathing.
Mrs Abernethy's clock has kept good time ever since. Pemberton still sits on the bench, but he only watches the hands now, and when the hour turns he always looks very pleased with himself.
