The cat has taken to the greenhouse roof again, the brass one you had me fix before you left for Edinburgh. Mrs Pargeter swears she heard it winding its own spring at four in the morning, which I doubt, though I found the key on the potting bench this morning with a fresh smear of oil on the bow. You will say I am imagining things. You always do, and you are generally right about the things that matter less.

Because the thing is that the seedlings are growing. Every row of foxgloves in the cold frame has put on two inches since Tuesday, and the tomatoes have started climbing the wire as though they have somewhere to be. The cat sits in the middle of it all with its goggles pushed up, watching the pipes that run under the beds hiss and tick. When I asked Mr Vane from the works whether a gardener could be sacked for spending too long in the boiler room, he laughed so hard he dropped his spanner.

I should tell you what I did last night. I climbed up with a lamp and a cup of cold tea, meaning only to scold it off the glass, and it looked at me with that tilted, unbothered face, straightened its bow tie with one brass paw, and turned a small cog on its waistcoat. The whole garden went still. Then every bloom in the bed turned its head toward the house, the way sunflowers follow the sun.

I have not sold the cottage yet, and I will not until you come home and see it for yourself. Bring the good wrench, and do not argue with me about the gearbox. The cat seems to want a word with you.
