Stippled astronaut on upper arm

Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A small full-body astronaut in a helmet and bulky spacesuit stands front-on at the centre of the frame. The figure is built entirely from black stippled dots, with denser dots for shadow on the helmet visor, chest and legs and lighter dots for highlights on the suit. The plain pale skin and dark background keep the design isolated, and the ink is entirely black and grey.

Don't look at me like that, the sea was not quiet that week. Sit closer, where the peat smoke can get into your coat, and I will tell you about Ruairidh Beag, who went up past the gulls and came down somewhere else entirely.

He wore a suit of grey cloth covered in a thousand small pricks, like rain on a window, and a round glass bowl over his face that caught the sun. The children said he was a diver who had lost his sea. Every night he climbed the cliff path with a lantern and stood on the headland, looking up at the black with its pinpricks of light, until the whole island knew the lantern by the way it shook.

One February the boat did not come back for three days. When Ruairidh walked into the shop at Port Vaich he had grey dust in his boots that was not from our beach, and he said the moon was dry and quiet and he had planted a flag there for his mother. Nobody believed him until the flag turned up on the headland, folded small like a letter.

So if you climb up tonight and see a little man standing against the stars with his hand on his chest, do not wave. He is only waiting for the tide to bring the boat, and he has always been very polite about waiting.
