Astronaut with moon head on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a small astronaut standing upright in a spacesuit, holding a helmet under one arm, with a cratered full moon in place of a head. The linework is fine and the shading is soft and stippled, with grey tones giving the suit its folds and the moon its texture. The black and grey design sits alone in the centre of a forearm, against a dark, blurred studio background.

Sit down, sit, and mind the bread, because Brother Osric will tell it wrong if he's left alone with the moon. The year the well at St Aldred's ran dry, the abbot sent young Tobias down the hill to the old quarry, where a cart had been left with a rope on it, and he was to bring it back before the frost. Tobias was the smallest boy in the house and the most stubborn, and he had sewn himself a suit from a beekeeper's smock with a copper stew pot for a helmet, because he had heard that men who went beyond the wall wore such things.

On the quarry road the moon came up over the scarp, big as a cheese and pocked like one left out in the rain, and Tobias stopped to stare. She seemed to tip, the way a coin tips in a pan, and slide off the sky into the quarry pool. By the time he reached the water she lay on the black surface, shaking herself into rings. Tobias tucked the copper pot under his arm, pulled off his boots, and waded in up to his chin.
The cold had teeth, so he counted his prayers out loud to keep them moving. He came up with the moon in both hands, heavy as a drowned sheep, and water ran off her in silver ropes. He could not carry her all the way home, so he sat on the cart, held her against his chest, and waited for the frost to decide whether he would be a saint or a statue. At dawn the brothers found him with the moon balanced on his shoulders, her face turned towards the bell tower, the copper pot still under his arm.
So that is how the moon came to have a head, and why the abbot let Tobias keep the suit. The rope is still coiled by the abbey door, in case she slips again.
