Stippled fox on the upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small fox in mid-stride faces left, drawn in black ink with fine outlines and stippled dots for the shading on its body and tail. The fox sits on the inner upper arm against a light textured fabric, with long reddish-blonde hair and a yellow top visible at the edge of the frame. The palette is black and skin tone only, and the composition keeps the tattoo centred with plenty of clear space around it.

Dear Tom, the fox came back this morning, the same one with the grey patch on its shoulder, trotting along the top of the drain as if it had paid a toll to be there. I left the back door open a crack and watched it lift one forefoot off the frost, pause, then set it down like a man testing ice in his good boots. Mum would have shooed it off with the broom. I didn't have the heart.

I've been thinking about the night we lost the ferret. You remember Dad blaming the fox, and you crying into the coal scuttle because you'd named the ferret after a footballer. What I never told you is that I saw the fox that night, standing in the lane with its tail held low, looking at our lit kitchen window as if it were counting us. It took nothing. Dad never believed me, and I stopped arguing once the hens were all accounted for.
The reason I'm writing is the reunion at the old school hall on the second Saturday in March. Mrs Harkness is still doing the raffle, apparently, and someone has found the Blackwater flood photograph with us both on the sandbags. I'd like you there. You can tell the room you were the one who was brave, and I'll let you, because I know the truth of it.
The fox reached the far bank just now and stopped to look back, one paw still raised, the way it always does before it decides. I think it was deciding about the hens. I've decided about Saturday. Ring me Thursday and say yes, or don't, and either way I'll leave the back door unlatched for a while. Love to Sarah and the boys. Your sister, Ruth.
