Three small birds on an elbow
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three small black bird silhouettes are tattooed in a cluster on the outer elbow and upper forearm of a raised arm. The birds have simple, solid outlines with no shading, and the ink is a dark black. The pale arm sits against a cream textured background, with a rolled denim sleeve and long reddish hair at the left edge of the frame.

My grandfather kept the Hallam farm above the reservoir, and the winter he lost the last of his ewes, three starlings came down out of a sky the colour of lead and sat on the gate post as if they'd been sent to inspect him.

He didn't care for birds. Starlings ate the seed he'd put by for the spring drill, and he said so, loud enough for the hens to hear. But on the morning the thaw began, the three of them lifted off the post together, wheeled once over the byre and went straight up into the murmuration, and he stood in the yard with the pitchfork in his hand and watched until his eyes ran.
Here is the part they don't tell you in the pub. When the ground softened, he walked the top field with a lantern and found the lost lamb alive under the hedge, shivering but whole, and beside it lay three small black feathers, laid in a neat row like a message. He never said who he thought had sent them. He only ever said, when anyone asked why he'd stopped swearing at that gate, that some things come back in threes, and you'd do well to leave the gate open.
