Small moose on the inner wrist

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small, simple moose is tattooed on the inner wrist, shown in a single dark ink with thin outlines and little or no shading. The hand is raised with the fingers loosely curled, and the moose sits low on the wrist crease, facing left. The plain teal backdrop makes the tattoo stand out clearly.

Nobody from Form 4B has ever agreed on what happened to Kenneth, the glass-eyed moose who hung above the stairwell at Ashworth Comprehensive for as long as anyone could remember. You are standing by the trestle table in the sports hall, holding a paper cup of warm wine that tastes of cardboard, when Dave Pilling sidles up with a sausage roll and says he has always known it was you.

It was a Friday in the October of your last year, the night the caretaker was off with his gout and the stairwell lights ran on a timer that gave you about four seconds. You remember the rattle of the hooks, the weight of him against your chest, the smell of dust and school polish. You remember Dave holding the torch with a hand that would not stop shaking, and the two of you lugging Kenneth down the back steps and out past the bins behind the chip shop, where you decided he deserved better than the rubbish and wedged him into the boot of Dave's uncle's Cortina instead.

Dave admits he has kept him all these years in his garage in Pontefract, wrapped in a bin bag behind the lawnmower. His wife wants the space back. You look at the clock above the climbing frame and think about the biro moose you drew on the inside of your wrist that night, facing left, because you had decided he was leaving town. You say you will come on Saturday. Dave says he will leave the garage door up, and for once neither of you makes a joke about it.
