Storm in a teacup with a sailing ship

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A teacup on a saucer holds rolling waves that spill over the rim, with a small sailing ship tossed in the surf. Above, a stippled storm cloud releases rain and lightning, and the cup is decorated with simple flower motifs. The shading is built from fine dots and bold outlines in black ink on a pale background.

Nell Harrow had kept the tea room at the top of Coble Lane for thirty-one years, and in all that time the teapot had never once boiled over in front of customers. Her late husband Alf had said the cups knew when people were lying. This morning the blue cup with the peonies on its side had started to rumble before the kettle was even warm, and by ten o'clock a grey squall was rolling across its rim.

Her son Danny came in at half past with a chart folded under his arm, saying he was taking the Wren out on the Thursday tide whatever anyone thought. He had been saying it since Easter. Nell set the cup down between them and watched the tiny ship in the surf lurch, its sails torn, the cloud above the saucer dropping a thin drizzle onto the tablecloth.

"It always does that when you lie to me," she said. "Or when you're frightened, which is worse." Danny laughed, then didn't. He pulled out the chair and sat, and for a while they listened to the spoon clink against porcelain while the waves inside slowly flattened, as if someone had taken a breath on the other side of the glass.

He did not take the Wren out on Thursday. He took it out on the Saturday, with a reef tied in and his mother's cup wrapped in a tea towel in the cabin. When he came home with salt in his hair, the flowers on the blue china were still bright and the sea inside it was perfectly calm.
