Sailing ship in rough waves
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A three-masted sailing ship with full sails and rigging rises above stylised, curling waves. The linework is bold black outline with parallel hatched lines within the waves and sails, and small dots and curls suggesting spray. The design is shown in black on white, centred with the ship at the top and the waves filling the lower half.

The wind came round the headland at four bells in the middle watch, and Mr Pryce was still arguing with the cook about the biscuit. Nobody had thought much of the glass that night, though it had been falling all afternoon. By the time the first sea came aboard over the weather rail, the topgallants were drumming and the men were climbing the ratlines barefoot, because boots slip on wet rope.

The waves stood up beside us like grey stable walls, their crests torn into spray that hung in the lamplight. Bosun Haskett bellowed to reef the mainsail before it took the masts with it. I was seventeen, eleven weeks aboard, and my fingers were too cold to feel the knife I'd been given for the lashings. I remember thinking how pretty the water looked from up there, all those parallel ridges of foam combing over each other, as if someone had ruled them onto the sea with a steady pen.
Then the foreyard dipped, the canvas bellied out like a held breath, and the lashing under my palm went taut as a fiddle string. I sawed until it parted and the sail tore free in one great shudder. Haskett clapped me on the back hard enough to bruise, and said nothing, which from him was a sermon.
We limped into Falmouth nine days later with a split topsail and a missing boat. Pryce gave me an extra shilling and I spent it on sugared almonds for the cook, by way of apology. I still have the knife. There is a notch in the blade where the lashing bit it, and when I turn it over I hear the wind come round the headland again.
