Stormtrooper helmet filled with roses

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A Stormtrooper helmet outline contains red roses, green leaves and small pink and purple flowers, with a speckled light blue background. Bold black outlines and the dark visor shapes define the helmet, while the roses are shaded with darker red tones. The design fills the frame centrally against plain skin and a light textile.

The band at the Palais stops mid-waltz because the drummer has spotted a man in a white helmet coming through the side door, and nobody in Harrow Lane has ever danced with a visor on. You stand by the cloakroom with your ticket crushed in your fist and watch the sequins turn under the lights. The helmet is painted the blue of a frosted window, flecked with silver like the sky over the allotments, and someone has packed its dome with red roses so thick the black visor sags like a tired eye.

He crosses the floor and the couples part for him. He says his name is Ray Dunmore, that he was never a soldier but a gardener at the depot, and that the Quartermaster sold him the helmet as scrap after the peace for the price of two pints. The roses are yours. You recognise the dark red ones from the window box on Mrs Hale's back wall, the ones you have been pinching cuttings from since April, and the green leaves are the ivy you pulled off her shed. You had never once thought anyone was watching.

He holds out a hand in a grey glove. You tell him the helmet has no ears and he tells you it never needed them, because it was built to listen to orders and it has been listening to nothing but the wind for three years. You step onto the floor. The band picks up the tune again, slower this time, and as you turn the petals begin to slide out through the gaps at the helmet's cheeks, falling one by one onto the boards between your feet.
