Traditional rose and leaves on an arm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large, symmetrical flower with red outer petals, a yellow middle ring and a red centre with a black dot, surrounded by green leaves and dark shaded foliage. The linework is bold and black, with solid fills and some stippled shading in the petals and leaves. Bright red, yellow and green dominate the design against pale skin, and the tattoo fills the centre of the frame with a partial design visible at the top edge.

Walter Gell had never once asked Mae Ferris to dance in four years of Saturdays at the Palais, so when he crossed the sprung floor during the interval with his cap in both hands, she set her gin down and waited for him to speak.

"I think we've got the same flash," he said, and turned the cap so she could see the rose pinned to its band. Red petals, a ring of gold like a boiled sweet, and a black eye at the centre. Mae knew it at once. She had the same rose on the inside of her wrist, done in Harry Dunmore's back room in Portsmouth the week before she left the Wrens, when Harry still had the old sheet pinned to the wall with a tack and a cigarette burn in one corner. "He only drew the one sheet," Walter said. "Said the black dot was so it would watch you back."
The band slid into a slow foxtrot. Mae had meant to say no, the way she said no to everyone, but her wrist was already turning towards him, and the rose on it caught the light from the glass ball overhead. Walter's cap slipped from his fingers and rolled under a chair. He didn't go after it.
They danced badly, or she did, and he laughed at her feet until the song ended. When the lights came up she found the cap and pinned the rose back to its band with her own hatpin, pressing the petals flat so the gold ring showed again. Walter put it on, looked at her from under the brim, and said the rose looked better on the cap than it had on the sheet.
