Striped animal curled in a circle on a thigh
Blackwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A curled-up striped animal, with pointed ears and a small face, fills a solid black circle. The body is built from bold black stripes filled with fine parallel hatching, giving a shaded, engraved effect. The tattoo is in black ink only, and a partly visible outline of a rose sits at the bottom edge of the frame on the same thigh.

You were sent to the Vesperine menagerie in the last week of frost, carrying a lantern and the Warden's written order to wake the striped beast before the court's winter reckoning. The lower courts had never seen it. The keepers said it slept coiled in the old drum-tower like a dropped coin, tail tucked under its chin, and that the first kings' engravers had cut its stripes so deep into the stone that they had never needed ink.

The tower stair was cold enough to crack your breath. At the top, the room was round and empty except for the beast, lying in a ring of black slate someone had polished until it held your lantern like water. Its ears were folded flat. Its face was small and sharp, with the look of a clerk asked to sign something twice. You set the lantern down and did not touch it. The Warden's seal was heavy in your coat, but it seemed a poor thing to wave at a creature that had been sleeping since before Vesperine had a name.
You sat with it until the lantern guttered. You told it about the price of bread, the toll bridge flooded at Marl, your mother's cough. Somewhere past midnight the stripes began to shift, hatched lines loosening like thread pulled from cloth, and you understood that the engravers had not made the pattern. They had copied it, badly, from the way the body held the cold.
In the morning the Warden found you asleep against the wall, the order still unbroken in your hand. "Well?" she said. You pointed. The beast was gone, and where it had lain the slate was bare, ringed with faint grey lines the colour of frost on a window. You did not write the report.
