Mr Osgood Pell had already relieved the Hartley boys of two shillings before the wasps found the windfalls, and he was not a cat who liked to be seen losing. He sat on the orchard wall in his grey frockcoat, lace at the throat brushed clean, his top hat tipped against a sun that had gone soft and yellow over the Bramley trees. The deck lay face down on a folded handkerchief between his paws, and he had not yet decided whether to be generous.

"Again," said the younger Hartley, who had freckles and no sense. "Double or nothing."
Pell studied the boy for a long moment, the way a magistrate studies a witness who has rehearsed his answers. He lifted the top card with the very tip of one claw and turned it over: the queen of spades, its corners curling like the leaves overhead. "Nothing," he said pleasantly, "is the only sum I have never once been asked to double." Then he watched the boy's right cuff, which had begun to twitch.
"Your sleeve, I believe," said Pell, and the ace of spades slid out and fell into the nettles with a small, guilty sound.
The boy went red to his ears and fled. Pell gathered his shillings, set the deck back in its case, and pressed a windfall into the grass beside the wall, since a debt of honesty was owed to someone. Behind him the orchard was filling with the low hum of the evening, and a single apple dropped from the highest bough, bruised on landing, its skin split open like a card that had never been meant to be seen.
