Forest path in an oval frame on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a wooded path curving away into a dark tunnel of branches, enclosed in an oval border of leaves and foliage. The linework is fine and detailed, with heavy black areas in the canopy and soft grey shading on the path and tree trunks. The design is in black and grey only and fills the thigh in a centred, upright composition.

The bus has gone without you again, so you take the lane. Nobody in Ashby Fold uses it after dark, and most people avoid it before dark too, because the beeches have grown together over the top since the Coronation and the light comes through only in coins. Your mother says it is the quickest way to the exchange, but your mother has never once walked it in her good shoes.

Halfway along, the path bends left and the grey daylight behind you thins to nothing. The wood pigeons stop. Dennis Pell from the chemist's told you a girl went in there in 1951 and came out two hours later with no memory of the walk, only a pressed flower in her blouse pocket, and nobody could say where it had come from. You keep one hand on the cold bark and count the trunks the way you counted stairs as a child, twenty-two, twenty-three, while the leaves overhead turn over like the pages of a ledger.
At the far end there is a green wooden stile you have never noticed before, and beyond it the roofs of Ashby Fold look smaller than they did this morning. A man in a grey mackintosh is sitting on the step with a tin of pear drops open on his knee. He offers you one without looking up. You take it, because refusing would be rude, and because it tastes of the lane itself, bitter and green.
When you finally reach the exchange, the supervisor asks why there are leaves in your hair. You tell her the truth, and she writes something down. Tomorrow you will take the lane again, because the bus is never on time, and because you want to know whether the man will still be sitting on the stile.
