Stylised cat with curling tail on a back
Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo
A woman with long dark hair is seen from behind, showing a tattoo of a stylised cat that runs down the centre of her spine. The cat's outline is drawn in thin, continuous black linework, with its tail ending in a curl near the lower back and a small patch of green colour on the head. The plain, pale background and soft lighting keep the focus on the tattoo.

Mrs Teague had kept the chandlery on Gull Steps for thirty years, and the cat that came with the lease had never once been bought or named. The locals called her Ink for the black of her, though the green-glass eye she turned on the harbour mouth was nobody's idea of a joke. She sat on the sill above the tide tables and counted the boats in and out, and when one failed to come back she simply stopped looking at the door.

The estuary took the Harrow boy in February, the one with the borrowed dinghy and the wrong oars. Ink watched the weather come up the Sound for two days, tail wrapped round her feet, and on the third morning she jumped down, went to the shelf of lamp oil, and knocked the brass funnel onto the flagstones with a sound like a bell.
Mrs Teague came out from the back swearing. Then she saw where the cat was looking, down past the pier, where the spray stood up white against the breakwater and a shape was waving a red jersey on an oar.
They launched the lifeboat before the squall had finished. Afterwards the harbourmaster said the cat had been right about the wind, which he had not believed, and Mrs Teague said the cat had only been right about the one thing, which was enough.
