Black script lettering runs down the spine of a woman with her hair in a bun, shown from behind on the upper back.

Script lettering down the spine

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A back view of a woman wearing a strappy top, with a black script inscription running vertically down the centre of her spine from the upper back to the lower back. The lettering uses fine, flowing strokes with thicker downstrokes, and the ink is solid black on tanned skin. The plain white background and soft light keep the focus on the tattoo.

You find the seed packet in the potting shed on the first cold morning of March, tucked behind a tin of creosote, its corners softened by damp. The handwriting on the flap is your grandmother's, though she has been dead nine years, and it says only: Sweet peas, the blue ones. Do not sow before the frost has left the north wall.

You sow them anyway in the cold frame, out of spite or hope, and then you forget them. The garden carries on without consulting you. The rhubarb bolts, hail cracks two panes of the greenhouse, and a neighbour's ginger cat sleeps on the compost heap as if it holds the deed. By May you have stopped looking at the frame at all.

Then one afternoon you lift the sacking and find a row of green tendrils already climbing the wire you strung for the runner beans, so eager they have knotted themselves into the mesh. Nobody told them the wall was cold. They simply went towards the light and waited for the rest of the year to catch up with them.

You cut the first flower on midsummer's eve and press it flat inside the seed packet, under your grandmother's careful line. Beneath it, in your own untidy hand, you write: found it. The lane is quiet, the kettle has gone cold on the windowsill, and the blue has come through the wire exactly where it was always going to.
