Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A black outline drawing of a cat seen in profile, sitting upright with its head turned. The body and tail are filled with spirals, knots, lattice work and dotted borders, with the tail curling into a large spiral at the bottom. The design uses only solid black linework on a white background.

Between the hill villages of Dunmere and Callow there lived a grey cat who belonged to nobody, and every knot tied in either village was tied with her leave. The cat sat on the stone wall between the two houses with her tail wound round her feet in a spiral, and she watched. On the morning of the third autumn the bride's mother came out with a length of red wool and found the cat had already tied it into a lattice of knots, each one no bigger than a barley grain. "Nobody can undo that without cutting it," the old woman said, "and nobody here will cut a wedding."
They married at the wall. The cat walked the length of the wool from one hand to the other, then curled her tail round the joined wrists, round and round, until the spiral ended in a dotted fringe of little knots. The fiddler stopped playing because he had lost his place, and nobody minded.
Afterwards the cat went back to her wall and washed one paw as if nothing had happened. The wool is still there, tied to the stones, and nobody from either village has ever found the end of it.
