Hold your cups still, the lot of you, and don't look at the door, because the wind has been trying the latch all evening and I'll not have it learn your names. The snow had buried the Ostler's Rest to the second shutter that winter, and Maud Harrow, who kept the kitchen fire, found a stranger asleep against the coal bin with ash caught in his hair like down.

He woke the way a coal wakes, all at once and smoking. He said his name was Sennet, that he had burned on the crags above the pass for three hundred winters, and that every one of them ended the same way, with him rising through the smoke to be born again. But the snow, he said, and he shivered so hard the crockery rattled, the snow has put my heart out, and I cannot rise on cold.

Maud set him by the bread oven and fed him broth. Steam came off his coat and curled up toward the rafters in long loops and scrolls, the way it does off a pan of milk left too long, and the men at the bar swore they saw feathers in it. She asked what he needed. He told her he needed something to burn that was not his own, and nothing else would take. She thought of the ledger under the counter, forty years of Ostler's debts, the names of drovers and widows who had never paid, and she fed the pages in one at a time. The fire roared green and gold. Sennet stood, shook out wings made of nothing but heat, and went up the flue with a sound like a bellows drawing breath. In the morning the road was open, and soot feathers were drifting down over the drifts like the last loose strokes of a pen. Outside the back door, in the new snow, a single curled track led up the hill and stopped at nothing at all.
