A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Don't watch the road while I talk, watch the dust, because that's where it comes from. The thing that came over the ridge past Harrow Wells had a head like a wave about to break, and it turned that head slowly, the way a man turns when someone calls his name from far off. The curl at its neck was no mane. It was the coil of the old well winch, and the creature had been wound up in it for longer than anyone's grandfather could remember.

The carter, Mattie Oakes, had a load of salt and a mule called Dorrit. The creature followed his wheel ruts for three nights, keeping its crest low against the wind. It never bit. It only wanted the water in his barrel, and each morning it left a spiral pressed into the sand beside the road so he'd know where it had been and that it was still there.

On the fourth night he stopped, poured a tin cup full, and set it down on the track. The creature drank with its long jaw, and its spikes lifted one by one, like a row of matchheads catching light. Then it turned and wound itself back into the dark, the spiral closing like a fist.

Mattie kept the salt and never sold a grain of it. Some nights, if you're out past the last post, you'll see sand lifting off the road in a slow curl with no wind to blame. That's the creature saying thank you, or reminding you the water is still owed. Either way, don't pour anything you can't spare.
