Stylised face portrait in black hatching on upper arm
Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A stylised human face is formed from dense, interlocking black hatched lines, with a single highlighted eye and a rough outline. Heavy black wash strokes surround the face and fill the background of the design, creating strong contrast with the pale hatched areas. The image is shown in black and grey, with the tattoo filling most of the frame against a dark background.

The function room above the Co-op smelled of cold chips and floor polish, and the first thing I saw was Gareth Pryce's face, or the shape of it, on a banner by the fire door. Someone had blown up our Year Eleven photograph and the committee had gone over every head with a biro. Not shading, exactly. Thousands of short strokes that crossed and knotted until each classmate looked carved from the same dark wood.

Gareth had drawn on his hand through double maths, lines so fine Mr Abbott called them smudges until he saw them up close. He never showed anyone the finished thing. Mrs Okafor found one in his exercise book, a face built from crosshatching with a single eye left bare and white, and she read it aloud to the class as an example of what not to do with a biro. Gareth went red to the ears and stayed off school for a week.
"You're staring," said Dee Murray, pressing a glass of prosecco into my hand. "It's the eye. Nobody knows who did the eye." I did. I had been the girl by the window that spring. He asked me to hold still for ten minutes, and when the bell went I left before he was finished. The eye on the banner was the only part of the photograph he had gone over in white, the one light in all that dark ink.
Near eleven the fire door opened and a man in a donkey jacket stood in the gap, squinting at the name badges. He had a biro tucked behind one ear. I went over, and when he said, "I wanted to finish it," I didn't ask what he meant. I just sat down by the window and let him look.
