Raven and woman's face on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raven with its beak open sits above a woman's face, with dark lips and a shadowed lower face. The linework is absent, and the form is built from smooth, detailed shading in black and grey, with a splattered black and white texture at the top and a dark, smoky fade along the lower part of the forearm. The design fills the forearm against a plain black background, with the wrist visible at the bottom of the frame.

The raven came down the chapel steps on the morning of the wedding and would not be shooed. Old Tamsin swept at it with the broom, and it hopped out of reach and looked at her sideways, the way a magistrate looks at a man who has lied twice.

'It has come for the vows,' said the miller's wife. 'Ravens remember what is promised and what is owed.'
Inside, the bride stood with her father's hand on her arm and her veil pinned back so the village could see her face. Her name was Hanne Virling, and she had made her choice in spring, against the wishes of her mother and the priest. The groom, Aldo, was a carter from the far side of the moor, a decent man who wept easily. When the question came, Hanne opened her mouth to answer, and the raven, which had followed them in through the open door, opened its beak too and said her name back to her in her own voice.
Everyone went still. Hanne did not. She waited until the echo had finished, then said 'I will' clearly, and the bird turned its head and was quiet.
On the fourth morning the raven was gone, and a single black feather lay on the church step. Hanne kept it in her prayer book, and when she was an old woman with forty years of quarrels and kindnesses behind her, she still said the words she had said that day, and meant them each time.
