Lace heart with purple roses on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A heart filled with grey lace-like patterning, dotted detail and scrolls sits at the centre of the design, framed by three purple roses and dark leaves. The roses are shaded in pink and violet, while the lace and background linework use black and grey shading. The design fills the frame vertically, with the skin of the forearm visible at the edges against a bright teal cloth.

The snow had closed the Hollen Pass for nine days when Maud Tarrant came up the road with a basket on her hip and a lie about her brother ready in her mouth. The carter at the inn would not take her further, and the toll-keeper at the stone bridge said the wind would strip the flesh from a sheep. She went on regardless, because the lace in the basket was promised to the Abbess at Cold Ferris for the feast.

Near the summit a woman stood in the road where no woman should be, bobbins hung from her apron like a row of small grey moons. She asked what was in the basket. Maud told her. The woman said the pass had always been paid for in lace, and held out her hand.
Maud had nothing to pay with but the work itself. So she unfolded the heart she had woven for her own wedding, the one that never came, and laid it over the stones. Purple roses she had stitched in thread dyed with bramble and alum, their leaves dark as wet slate, and scrolls curling in the middle where the mesh grew thick. The woman touched the beads set along its border, one black dot to every knot, and counted them under her breath.
Then she gave back the basket, and the road opened ahead, white and clean, all the way down to the lamps of Cold Ferris. Maud never learned her name. Each spring after, a single rose came up through the thaw on the north side of the pass, and the carters would stop to pick it and say the lace was still holding.
