Stylised woman with a cat on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A stylised woman with dark bobbed hair and a red top holds a cat with yellow eyes, set against a teal plant at the lower wrist. The design uses thick black outlines, flat red and teal fills and simplified, angular shapes that recall modernist portraiture. Three views of the same forearm show the tattoo wrapping around from the elbow to the wrist.

The cat had come down the wall of the granary the same week the river rose, and by the time the flood went back into its banks Nefret had decided it belonged to her. She did not ask anyone. She fed it the dried fish meant for the boat and let it sleep on the good linen in the chest by the door, and when her brother said a cat was a thing for temples, not for a widow's house, she only pointed out that the temples had plenty of cats and none of them had come to her.

The lotus was her own. She had dug it from the mud at the canal edge and carried it home in a clay pot wrapped in wet reeds, and she had kept it on the sill where the morning sun reached it first. Every day she poured the grey water over its roots and every day the leaves opened a little wider, green as the glaze on the tomb figures in the market. The cat liked to sit beside it and watch the water beetles, its tail curled round the pot's rim as if it were guarding the thing.
Then the scribe from the lower town came asking for a tenth of the harvest, and then for a tenth of the lotus seed, which the priests of the lake wanted for their offerings. Nefret said the lotus was not a field. The scribe wrote something on his tablet and went away. That night the cat would not come off the sill, and when she tried to lift it, it dug its claws into the wooden frame and hissed at her as if she were the one who had broken something.
In the morning the pot was gone, and so was the cat, and the sill was bare except for a single seed pod lying on the reed mat. Nefret picked it up, cracked it with her thumb, and found the seeds inside already split and green. She planted one in the pot she had left, and sat with her back to the wall, waiting for it to decide she was worth coming back to.
