Pale-faced woman in a frame with a red rose
Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A pale-faced woman with long blue hair and small flowers tucked into it sits within an ornate orange and pink frame, with her hands and a bouquet-like shape partly visible on the left. A large red rose with green and orange leaves sits on the left side of the design. Bold black outlines, soft shading and saturated primary colours define the piece, which fills most of the photographed limb against a plain, lightly lit background.

Dear Mags, you'll think I've gone soft, but I took the blue paint off the lion's cage this morning and found I'd been painting my own face in the mirror of the caravan without knowing it. The fair pulled out of Ashby at four and I have been sitting on the back step since with a cup of tea gone cold, watching the field where the big top stood. Ronnie says the rose man is coming up from Skegness for the week, and he'll do the stripes on my forearm if I let him, but I told him I want the frame instead, the gold one from the wagon with the chipped corner. He laughed. He doesn't know what I mean by it.

The lady in the glass was never a real lady, you know that. Old Mr Fenwick painted her for the mirror tent when his wife was still alive, and she had the hair from a sheep's fleece dyed in the Thursday bath. Every night for thirty years somebody sat in the chair and she looked back out at them, cool as milk, flowers in her hair from the florist in Melton. I used to think she was sad. Now I think she was only waiting for someone to stop talking long enough to notice she was there.
So I've made up my mind. When the rose man comes, I'll keep my hands folded in my lap the way she does, I'll let the leaves go wild round the edge, and I'll see whether the ink holds better than the paint did. If it does, I'll stay on past the autumn season. If it doesn't, well, you'll have a postcard of a rose with a frown on it.
