Succulent rosette and sprig on upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large succulent rosette with layered, fleshy leaves dominates the upper arm, with a smaller sprig of leaves trailing down towards the elbow. The petals are shaded with smooth gradients and soft pink and lilac edge highlights that give the leaves a rounded, lifelike form. Green ink carries the whole design against pale skin, and the tattoo fills the upper right of the frame with a plain, light background.

We came down through the scree at dawn with the mules complaining. Below the last shelter the rocks were crusted with those fleshy cups, each leaf green as bottle glass and blushed pink at the rim, as though the cold had pinched them. I carried it to the city on a train that smelled of diesel and wet wool, and set it on the sill of a rented room above a bakery, where it sat through a grey winter doing nothing I could see.

In March a pup appeared at its base, pale as a fingernail. I wrote to tell him the thing had finally decided to grow. His reply came a fortnight later in square capitals: DIVIDE IT WHEN IT CROWDS, AND BRING THE PUP UP TO ME BEFORE THE SNOW GOES. So I did, and found him on the wall where the pass begins, waiting with his hat pulled low and his hands full of stone.
