A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Okafor's dye house on the canal had been losing its colour for a week before anyone admitted the vat was wrong. Dilys held the pattern sheet to the window and counted the rosettes again: six in the crown, two in the eye sockets, the berries hanging from their stems like beads off a broken necklace. The cloth was meant to start violet at the crown and fade to pink at the jaw, but the vat kept giving her violet all the way down, muddy and heavy, as if the bottom had gone to sleep.

She climbed the iron gantry with her grandfather's paddle and stirred from the bottom, slowly, the way he had taught her before his hands got too stiff for it. The heavier pigment had sunk through the week while nobody touched it. Pink came up in long slow threads, like someone unpicking a hem, and by the time the surface caught the light it looked almost like sunset over the gasworks. Mrs Okafor came out in her wellingtons, took one look and said nothing, which was how she said yes.

The mandala crown went on last, Dilys stitching the dyed cloth onto the backing board by hand while the radio played the shipping forecast. She kept the flowers loose and the lines fine, the way the old pattern wanted them, and tied off each berry with a knot no bigger than a seed. When she finally hung the cloth on the drying line above the water, the violet had settled at the top and the pink ran down toward the edge, and the last sun caught the berries and made them look wet.
