Sugar skull girl with pony and bats on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A large colour tattoo shows a cartoon girl with sugar skull face paint and a blue bow with a skull motif, seated beside a green sugar skull pony with a mane and flower. Behind them are pale blue wings, pink clouds, a moon and a line of bats, with a purple coffin and small tombstone at the lower right. Bold outlines, smooth colour fills and soft shading are shown across three views of the same arm.

The pony had got out again, and Nell found him at ten past two in the morning, standing in the dodgem queue with a rope of marigolds tangled in his mane and looking pleased with himself. Her uncle had painted him the year before the fair lost its money: sugar skull face, webbed lashes, one amber eye that stared at you as if it had already read your debts. Nobody had oiled his hinges since.

She climbed on anyway, because the bats were already wheeling round the lamp above the helter-skelter and there was no sense going home to an empty flat. The pony trotted, then cantered, then simply left the boards, pale blue wings unfolding from his shoulders with a sound like wet laundry. They rose over the sleeping front, past the pink-lit sea mist, towards the little tombstone the council had put up for the old ghost train.
'You are not a horse,' she told him. He blew a puff of sugar into the air. 'Fine. Not a horse, not a dog, not a pet.' At the end of the pier stood the purple coffin that had been empty since 1987, and the pony landed beside it as neatly as a cat on a windowsill, folding his wings with a flourish that was entirely for her benefit.
At dawn the gulls found them back at the carousel. The pony settled onto his pole with a creak and went still, the way he always did for the public. Nell tucked a marigold back into his mane, then checked her own reflection in the ticket booth glass. The blue bow with the skull on it was still there, a little crooked, and the skull was grinning at her as though it knew exactly where they had been.
